Back to directory

Hal has a passion for using music to emphasize and illuminate the scriptures of the lectionary, telling the many stories and experiences of the liturgical year.  He also feels called to create community through working as an ensemble, earning a sense of belongingness.

Hal graduated with his BFA in music from Western Michigan University.  He has served as Music Director at First Baptist Church, Kalamazoo, First United Methodist Church in Plainwell, and originally at North Presbyterian Church in Lansing, Michigan.  He is proud of both his Presbyterian and Scottish heritage.

Hal conducts Blendings Vocal Ensemble, a Kalamazoo based adult choir that performs great American songbook standards.  He is very involved with the local theatre scene, music directing and performing at the Kalamazoo Civic Theatre, Farmers Alley Theatre, and other venues.  He is also music coordinator and composer for All Ears Theatre, a company that recreates vintage and original radio dramas.

Hal enjoys living in the vibrant, arts-enriched community of Kalamazoo, with his husband Pete, and their two cats, Clyde and Violet.  He also enjoys escaping to the lakes or mountains for a hike, a bike, or a kayak whenever possible.
